Definition
A unit fraction is a fraction with 1 as the numerator. It represents one equal part of a whole.
A unit fraction is the building block of all fractions. Just as one brick builds a wall, unit fractions stack up to make larger fractions: 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.
Examples
- 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5 are all unit fractions.
- 1/8 means one out of eight equal parts.
- A pizza cut into 6 equal slices: each slice is 1/6.
