Thousands

Grades 2–5

Definition

The thousands place is the fourth position from the right in a whole number. One thousand equals 10 groups of one hundred or 1,000 ones.

If you stack 10 flats of one hundred together, you get a big cube of 1,000. The thousands place tells how many cubes you have.

Examples

  • In 3,000, the 3 in the thousands place means 3 groups of one thousand.
  • In 4,582, the 4 is worth 4,000.
  • 10 hundreds = 1 thousand.
