Symmetry

Grades 2–5

Definition

A shape has symmetry if it can be divided into two halves that are mirror images of each other. The dividing line is called the line of symmetry.

Fold a shape along its line of symmetry. If both halves line up perfectly, the shape is symmetrical. It is like looking in a mirror.

Examples

  • A butterfly has symmetry because its left and right wings match.
  • The letter A has one vertical line of symmetry.
  • A square has 4 lines of symmetry.
