Rounding

Grades 2–5

Definition

Rounding means replacing a number with a nearby number that is simpler or easier to work with. You round up if the digit is 5 or more, and round down if it is 4 or less.

On a number line, find the two round numbers your number sits between. Whichever one it is closer to is the answer. If it is exactly halfway, round up.

Examples

  • 37 rounded to the nearest ten is 40.
  • 123 rounded to the nearest hundred is 100.
  • 85 rounded to the nearest ten is 90.
