Pictograph

Grades 1–4

Definition

A pictograph uses pictures or symbols to represent data. Each picture stands for a certain number of items, shown in a key.

Instead of numbers or bars, pictographs use fun images to show information. You count the images and multiply by the key value to find the total.

Examples

  • A pictograph where each smiley face = 2 students who like soccer.
  • If one apple symbol = 5 apples, then 3 symbols = 15 apples.
  • A half symbol can represent half the value in the key.
