Definition
Percent means "per hundred" and is written with the % symbol. It expresses a number as a fraction of 100.
Think of a 10-by-10 grid with 100 squares. If 75 squares are shaded, then 75% of the grid is shaded.
Examples
- 50% = 50/100 = 1/2.
- 25% = 0.25 = 1/4.
- 100% means the whole thing.
