Pattern

Grades K–5

Definition

A pattern is a sequence that follows a rule or repeats in a predictable way. Patterns can use numbers, shapes, or colors.

Patterns are like rhythms in music. Once you figure out the rule, you can predict what comes next, just like humming the next note of a familiar song.

Examples

  • 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (add 2 each time).
  • Red, blue, red, blue, red, blue (alternating colors).
  • 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 (perfect squares).
