Number Line

Grades K–5

Definition

A number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal intervals along its length. It helps us see the order and spacing of numbers.

Picture a ruler laid flat. Numbers get larger as you move right and smaller as you move left. You can jump along it to add or subtract.

Examples

  • On a number line from 0 to 10, 5 is exactly in the middle.
  • We can show 3 + 4 = 7 by starting at 3 and jumping 4 spaces to the right.
  • Fractions like 1/2 can be placed between 0 and 1 on a number line.
