Median

Grades 4–5

Definition

The median is the middle number in a set of data when the numbers are arranged in order from least to greatest. If there are two middle numbers, the median is their average.

Line up all the values from smallest to largest. Walk in from both ends at the same speed. The number you meet at is the median.

Examples

  • The median of 3, 5, 7 is 5 (the middle value).
  • The median of 1, 3, 3, 6, 7, 8 is (3 + 6) / 2 = 4.5.
  • The median of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 is 6.
