Mean

Grades 4–5

Definition

The mean is the average of a set of numbers. To find the mean, add all the numbers together and divide by how many numbers there are.

Imagine stacking books in unequal piles. If you rearranged them so every pile was the same height, that equal height is the mean.

Examples

  • The mean of 4, 8, and 6 is (4 + 8 + 6) / 3 = 6.
  • The mean of 10, 20, and 30 is 60 / 3 = 20.
  • The mean of 5, 5, 5, and 5 is 5.
