Definition
An equation is a math sentence that uses an equals sign (=) to show that two expressions have the same value.
Think of an equation as a balance scale. Both sides must weigh the same. If you add something to one side, you must add the same to the other to keep it balanced.
Examples
- 3 + 4 = 7 is an equation.
- x + 5 = 12 is an equation where x = 7.
- 2 x 6 = 12 is an equation.
