Denominator

Definition

The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction. It tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

If a pizza is cut into 8 slices, the denominator (8) tells you the total number of slices the whole pizza was cut into.

Examples

  • In 3/4, the denominator is 4.
  • In 1/2, the denominator is 2.
  • In 5/8, the denominator is 8, meaning the whole is split into 8 equal parts.
