Carrying

Grades 1–4

Definition

Carrying is the process of moving a value to the next place-value column during addition when the sum of a column is 10 or more.

Examples

  • In 28 + 15, 8 + 5 = 13, so you write 3 and carry the 1 to the tens column.
  • In 456 + 378, you may need to carry from ones to tens and from tens to hundreds.
  • 67 + 45: 7 + 5 = 12, carry the 1.
