How to Help Your Child Master the Multiplication Table
Multiplication facts are one of the most important building blocks in elementary math. A child who knows their times tables fluently can tackle division, fractions, and multi-step problems with confidence. Here's how to help your child get there.
Why Multiplication Fluency Matters
When multiplication facts are automatic, your child's brain is free to focus on higher-level thinking. Instead of spending mental energy figuring out 7 × 8, they can focus on understanding the word problem or working through a multi-step equation.
Research shows that students who achieve multiplication fluency by the end of third grade perform significantly better in math throughout middle school and beyond.
Start With What They Already Know
Before drilling the full table, remind your child how much they already know:
- ×1 facts: Any number times 1 is itself
- ×2 facts: Just doubling—most kids learn this early
- ×5 facts: Count by fives—easy to remember
- ×10 facts: Add a zero—the simplest pattern
That's already 4 out of 12 rows covered. When you frame it this way, the task feels much less overwhelming.
The Order That Works Best
Don't go straight from ×1 to ×12 in order. Instead, teach in this sequence:
- ×1, ×2, ×5, ×10 (the easy ones first)
- ×3 (count by threes, or double-plus-one-more-group)
- ×4 (double the ×2 result)
- ×9 (the finger trick or the "tens minus one group" pattern)
- ×6, ×7, ×8 (the hardest facts—but by now, most are already learned from the other direction)
By this point, only a handful of facts remain: 6×7, 6×8, 7×7, 7×8, and 8×8.
Effective Practice Strategies
1. Short Daily Sessions
Five to ten minutes of multiplication practice every day beats an hour once a week. Consistency builds the neural pathways that make recall automatic.
2. Use Patterns
Help your child discover patterns in the table:
- ×9 pattern: The digits always add up to 9 (9, 18, 27, 36...). The tens digit goes up by one, the ones digit goes down by one.
- ×4 pattern: Double, then double again
- ×8 pattern: Double three times
- Square numbers: Highlight the diagonal (1, 4, 9, 16, 25...) as special landmarks
3. Practice in Both Directions
If your child knows 3 × 7 = 21, make sure they also recognize 7 × 3 = 21. The commutative property cuts the number of facts to memorize nearly in half.
4. Focus on the Tough Ones
Once the easy facts are solid, identify the specific facts your child struggles with and target those. For most children, the hardest facts are:
- 6 × 7 = 42
- 6 × 8 = 48
- 7 × 8 = 56
- 8 × 8 = 64
Create flashcards or practice sheets focused specifically on these.
5. Make It Physical
Write facts on index cards and sort them into "know it" and "still learning" piles. Seeing the "know it" pile grow is incredibly motivating.
Fun Practice Ideas
- Multiplication war: Use playing cards—each player flips two cards and multiplies them. Highest product wins the round.
- Skip counting songs: Musical patterns help facts stick in memory
- Times table challenge: Time how fast your child can complete a set of problems, and track their personal best
- Real-world connections: "We need 6 bags of apples with 4 apples each. How many apples total?"
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Don't rush: Make sure each set of facts is solid before moving to the next
- Don't rely only on memorization: Understanding what multiplication means (groups of) helps when memory fails
- Don't make it stressful: Keep practice sessions positive and encouraging
- Don't skip the basics: If ×2 facts aren't automatic, ×4 and ×8 will be much harder
When to Expect Mastery
Most curricula expect multiplication fact fluency by the end of third grade. However, every child is different. Some children achieve fluency in weeks, while others need months of consistent practice. The key is steady progress, not speed.
If your child is still working on multiplication facts in fourth or fifth grade, don't worry—but do make it a priority. The further they go in math without fluency, the harder everything becomes.
